World Champions of the Whole Country!

I laugh every time I hear a member of some US sports team proclaim his/her team is the world champion of whatever sport it happens to be. In the case of the NBA and MLB, they each have one opponent outside the USA and in both cases, that opponent is in Toronto, a stone’s throw from the US of A. In the NFL, it’s all US baby. Yet, these teams love to proclaim their world championships, despite the fact that they don’t even leave the continent and rarely cross a national border. The NHL comes a little closer with seven Canadian teams, but still…..

In my mind (twisted as it may be), there are few sports where the participants truly qualify to use the term “world champion”. Does it really matter? No, but it’s the random thought of the day for me.
